As Essential as a Summer Breeze

I've lived in an urban environment for years, but I can easily recall the scent of fresh-cut grass and the feeling that goes with it. Or the unexpected, pleasant feeling I get when I walk past honeysuckle or I smell the ocean for the first time after a long winter. I don't think anyone can deny the effect that scent has on mood and emotion. It's why essential oils have been used for thousands of years, to help improve overall health or help balance emotions.

But, the actual term "aromatherapy" wasn't coined until the 1900s. Aromatherapy is normally used through inhalation or as a topical application of essential oils. Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants. Unique aromatic compounds capture the plant's scent or "essence" and give each essential oil its characteristic.

When you inhale essential oils, you stimulate the part of the brain connected to smell, including the nose and the brain. These molecules enter the nose, pass through the lungs, and from there, they move to other parts of the body.

As the molecules reach the brain, they affect the limbic system, which is linked to the emotions, breathing, memory, stress, and even some physical attributes like heart rate and blood pressure.

When we were formulating, it was essential that our flagship oil has a positive effect on the skin and also offers a positive experience as a whole. We experimented with essential oils and loved the idea of balancing floral, herbal, and citrus notes within one scent.

Rose Geranium essential oil (pelargonium graveolens) brings a herbaceous aroma with a rosy floral note. It is known to relieve the mind of stresses and promote feelings of relaxation and optimism.

The fragrance of Grapefruit essential oil (citrus paradise) is considered beneficial due to its ability to soothe the spirit and help balance a tired and overstimulated nervous system.

The essence of Vetiver essential oil (vetiveria zizaniodes) is fresh and earthy, and its clean, aromatic notes are known to promote serenity and encourage feelings of tranquility.

We like to say that together, our signature essential oil blend brings a restorative essence to the spirit.*

*Please note that essential oils are powerful, so when used topically they should in a quality carrier oil. The essential oils in Avoila Nourishing Face Oil are minimal, organic and from carefully chosen sources.
